"'Just as the aftermath of a major building project can take at least as long as the actual project itself, so the tribute from the client can be a long time coming although in my case it is just over three months since you left and you were here for nearly five.
I will leave it to your imagination how much time and effort it has taken to make my house a home again. So with everything now more or less straight, and with more time on my hands, I am writing to express my appreciation and thanks for everything you did.
From the time we met at the Smugglers Haunt Hotel in Brixham on the morning of May 5 2016 until your departure from Surbiton on May 18 2017, I never had any doubt that I had found the right company to carry out the new build, complete modernisation, and sensitive restoration work which my unique Victorian coach house required. This is not to say that I didn't consult with other building companies but they seemed to lack the empathy, combined with economy, which you possessed.
From the short, damp and wet days of early Winter through to the late Spring you never failed to show at the right time, full of cheerfulness and optimism, with the right logistics in place, and prepared to put in the long hours which the task required. Amongst all of this you were always willing to discuss any matter with me at any time which was very much appreciated.Your expertise in all aspects of building work and your enthusiasm for every job, no matter how laborious or mundane, never ceased to amaze me.
Your diplomatic skills were noteworthy too. It is not nice to have to vacate your home for a long time and to return most days for site meetings and witness the apparent chaos and complete destruction necessary on a job of this size. But you always conveyed the fact, perhaps sometimes unconsciously, that everything was alright and for the best, and that in the end all would be well.Looking back I am pleased - I am tempted to say astonished - how well we all got on.
Some building projects, especially lengthy ones, develop pot holes along the way and become big dramas, with disagreements, misunderstandings, and worse. But in our case compromises, when required, were quickly reached and anything untoward was soon resolved and, in the end, quite trivial in the big scheme of things. I now struggle to recall exactly what those issues were.
As well as yourselves, I must pay tribute to your men whether from your part of the world or local. I know all their names but, apart from one, I will refer to their professions. The brick and stable-block layer, carpenters and joiners, damp proofers, electricians, glaziers, painters and decorators, plasterers, plumbers, and tilers - even the skip and ready-mix drivers and the driver from Jewsons - were highly-skilled professionals and outstanding personalities. Jay, however, your general labourer, deserves a mention in dispatches.
Properly mentored and possibly nudged towards an apprenticeship of some sort, he will do well in life especially once he has given up smoking and improved his diet which should come in time. A good hard-working young man.
In conclusion, even now, whenever I look around the entire house and its exterior, I see countless cases of attention to detail. I also see that everything is properly constructed, well finished, and simply right. Compliments from my family, friends and neighbours have been numerous. You can therefore sit back - not that you would - and reflect on a job well done.Thank you very much for all you did for me and for being my partners in a great endeavour.I wish everyone, but especially you two, every success in the future.
With my very best wishes,
Adrian'
